Battle of the Brands, Ford Continues to hold off the Competition at Round Two of The Global RallyCross Championship

Report and Images By Neil McDaid

Snoqualmie, WA. Round two of the 2011 Global RallyCross Championship, Andreas Eriksson who was filling in for Marcus Gronholm in the Best Buy/Ford Fiesta took top honors in the Super Rally on day one, while his Ford teammate Tanner Foust in the Rockstar Energy Ford Fiesta made it a 1-2 for Ford Racing as he claimed victory on day-two in RallyCross. The winning weekend for Ford has moved them to the top of the manufactures points in the GRC Championship.

For round number two of the Global RallyCross Championship, [GRC] teams headed northwest to Snoqualmie Washington. The second event on the GRC calendar would be held on the grounds of the historic Snoqualmie Falls Lumber Co., which is now the home of DirtFish Rally School.
Converting the open grounds of the old mill to a RallyCross park for the weekend posed some challenges for the organizers in how they would accommodate an unknown number of fans.
GRC organizers setup several large spectator grand stands at one side of the course, but it soon became apparent they didn’t come close to accommodating the large numbers of fans that showed up for this rapidly growing form of motorsport.

It’s critical to the success of this sport to have great vantage points and facilities for the fans, so they can get up close to the action. The large multilevel grand stands were located near the jump giving those lucky enough to get there early a great viewing location. For others left viewing from the ground level the k-rail that lined out the course blocked some of the action as the cars raced around the flat track layout. There is no question that spectator seating can be improved should the GRC return to DirtFish in 2012.

With the exception of the gap jump the course layout was a drastic contrast from what driver’s tackled at round one in Irwindale Speedway.
The course was a 60/40 split, give or take, between tar [60] and gravel.
Drivers would launch from a standing start from one of the tarred sections followed by a short straight into a tight right hander and then onto the first gravel section.
After they completed the first gravel section, they would then charge down through a large warehouse, a very unique feature of this facility. After exiting the warehouse on the other side, drivers would have another short tarred section before facing the mandatory gravel jump. AWD cars had to take the jump at least once, and only once per heat. We figured by taking the Joker / jump section drivers had about a thirteen second advantage over the twisty maze of concrete K-rail that lined out the rest of the track.
The 2WD cars were not required to take the jump, their joker lap ran alongside the jump which was also on gravel. Their joker advantage was about the same as taking the jump, about 13 seconds.
The joker section on most RallyCross tracks is normally the longer way around, but in this particular layout it was definitely the expressway. .

Day One:
For some unknown reason the jump set up dimensions/angle were not the same as Irwindale, and it took several passes and a hard landing from the “jump tester” Tanner Foust to get it all dialed in. As we have seen several times in the past, all cars do not fly over gap the same, over the two days of racing the jump would claim yet another car and a few parts from others.
Organizers would eventfully get things underway with the Super Rally event. Now, in my humble opinion GRC should just ditch the Super Rally portion and concentrate on running two days of RallyCross. These events are so similar that I feel fans really don’t see any difference, with the exceptions of the finals.

For Subaru Team driver Dave Mirra, his weekend was set to get off to an awful start, Dave would clip the edge of the gap ramp and roll his Subaru. The car did a full roll and landed back on all fours, Dave was able to get it fired up again and limped back to the pits where the factory team made some record fast repairs, the first of many on this weekend.
The carnage did not stop with Mirra; Joseph Burke who lost his speedometer due to an electronic dash malfunction had to take a “best guess” at his approach speed to the jump. The correct approach speed is absolutely critical, too slow and its head first into the landing ramp, too fast and it’s a long flight with an unpredictable landing, the approach speed also seems to vary greatly depending on the car.
Carrying just a little too much speed, Burke launched like a scene from Smokey and the Bandit, clearing the front edge of the landing ramp by a good 30 feet, then landing nose down into the gravel, Burke had the nerve to stay on the power and somehow avoided total disaster, nonetheless the car sustained heavy front end damage and his day was done.

We would also see the departure of one of the two Team Hyundai Veloster cars entered, Marcus Dodd contacted the wall while battling door to door on the gravel and damaged the steering, Surprisingly Marcus would not return to competition on day two.
Working through the qualifying rounds in AWD we would see Tanner Foust edge out a victory over Steven Verdier to move Foust to the Super Rally final.
One of the best battles in the AWD on day one would come to us courtesy of two of Europe’s top RallyCross drivers. Andreas Eriksson, who we mentioned earlier, was filling in for Marcus Gronholm in the Best Buy Fiesta, would go head to head with Mikael Jernberg in the Skoda Fabia.
These guys left nothing on the track, Eriksson throw down his classic sideways blocking move into the first transition onto the gravel and took the early lead, Jernberg hung tough swapping the lead back and forth, before Andreas finally opened a slight gap and took the victory.
The AWD Super Rally final was now set to be an all Ford affair with teammates Foust and Eriksson on the line.
But it was to be a short lived final, fighting for position into the first turn, Foust would make contact with a course barrier, jolting the steering wheel in such a way that he dislocated his shoulder; the race was over as quickly as it started. With Foust unable to continue, Andreas Eriksson would take the overall victory, the injured Foust would have to settle for second with Steven Verdier taking the final spot podium.

Day One – 2WD
After missing round one in Irwindale due to issues with the importation of his car Mikael Eriksson’s mighty Porsche 911 was finally here and set free to run riot over 2WD.
This Porsche is a far cry from anything we have seen competing in 2WD in the GRC to-date, putting out somewhere in the region 360-400hp [??] it easily had 150-200hp on its nearest rival.
We were somewhat surprised to see several of the returning podium finisher from round one getting eliminated in the 2WD Super Rally Quarter finals.
Matthew Johnson in the Mazda RX-8 would fall to Dillon Van Way in the Ford Focus.
Kris Dahl in a Honda Civic would take out Randy Zimmer in the Miata.

Onto the semi finals, local 2WD legend Cody Crane in his little green Honda CRX, would go head to head with Dillon Van Way in the Focus.
Cody is without question one of the fastest and most exciting 2WD drivers currently competing in U.S. rally, unfortunately due to lack of budget he rarely competes outside of his local northwest events.
The semi final battle between Van Way and Crane was neck and neck until Crane made an unbelievable pass on Van Way on the closing lap and snatched the victory.

Crane was now paired up against Mikael Eriksson’s Porsche in the 2WD Super Rally final. Watching the Porsche rip up the track throughout the day may have left many thinking that this was a no win situation for Crane in the CRX, but apparently no one told Cody.
Although, Eriksson’s Porsche never gave up the lead to Crane, he seemed to have a lot of trouble shaking the little green Honda especially throughout the technical gravel section. Down through the warehouse the Porsche would power ahead, but Crane just kept the Honda matted, never lifting trying to keep in touch. In the end Eriksson would claim victory, but just barely as the little CRX was stuck to his rear bumper. Cody may have lost this battle but to the fans in the stands he was the hero as they cheered loudly as he took his place on the 2WD podium.

Day two
Day two would see even more fans  showing up to check out the RallyCross action at the Dirt Fish facility, and we would witness yet another spectacular wreck on the gap jump.
Polish driver Andi Mancin, who has competed in the Rally America Championship in recent years, would lose a turbo pipe as he approached the jump. Andi barely made it across the gap; the car would land on the edge of the landing ramp and was then flung into the air with front end parts flying everywhere. After pile driving the nose into the landing ramp, the car would come to rest with a hard landing on it’s roof.
Rescue crews were quickly on scene and Andi was extracted from the wreckage. Andi was sore from the belts but otherwise fine.
After the qualifying rounds we would move directly to the heats. In 2WD it was total domination by the by Mikael Eriksson in the Porsche setting the fastest times throughout.

Most fans were unaware that both Super AWD and Limited AWD cars were mixed together during the heats, as they have no distinctive markings to identify the classes.
As the series grows, organizers will most likely break out these classes into their own heats and finals. In the AWD unlimited class Andreas Eriksson would set the pace in his Ford Fiesta, and just seemed untouchable throughout the heats. In the AWD limited class, despite having another run in with the jump Joseph Burke in his Mitsubishi would manage to win his heat and take max points in class.

With the heats completed it was onto the 2WD finals, as with AWD both the Super and Limited classes of 2WD cars were mixed together. To no-one’s surprise, it was Mikael Eriksson’s Porsche that tore off the line and had the lead into the first turn, Eriksson never looked back.
Matthew Johnson slotted into second, Johnson who had just acquired his Mazda RX-8 before the last round in Irwindale spend most of the weekend tweaking the car to extract every last bit of power from the high revving rotary mill. In the final, Johnson definitely found some extra grunt in the Mazda as he seemed to hold off Dillon Van Way in the Focus with ease. Positions would stay unchanged throughout the race, in the end it was Eriksson, claiming the victory over Johnson, and Van Way taking third.

With the 2WD final in the bag, it was onto the grand finale, the AWD A-Main.
On the line, Ford team mates, Tanner Foust and Andreas Eriksson, were joined by Michael Jernberg in the Skoda, Hyundai team driver Rhys Millen, and Privateer Stephen Verdier in his Subaru STI. Lining up behind the main field was Subaru team driver Dave Mirra. Despite showing some great speed, Mirra had a challenging weekend, with his roll on day one, and then followed by a hard lick off the concrete k-rail on day two; Mirra was brought into the final as an organizers option.
As they launched from the line it was Andreas Eriksson with the edge, and off in to the first corner making his Best Buy Fiesta as wide as possible flicking the rear out while blocking the inside line with the nose. Foust and Jernberg were door to door jockeying for position, with Verdier and Millen in tow. As Eriksson began to open a slight gap on Foust and Jernberg it seemed that he was set to sweep the weekend, but a puncture on the penultimate lap would see Foust move to first. Andreas would also concede second to the Skoda of Michael Jernberg, Andreas barely held off Stephen Verdier who was also slowed by a puncture for third.
With Tanner on the podium it capped off a great weekend for Ford, privateers Michael Jernberg and Stephen Verdier proved it is possible to hang with the factory teams. Hyundai drivers Rhys Millen and Marcus Dodd despite not yet making it to the podium showed great promise for the Veloster.
Foust’s win in Seattle moves him to the top of the point’s standings after two rounds. A single point separated Michael Jernberg and Stephen Verdier for second and third.
Jimmy Kenney leads Joseph Burke in AWD limited class, with the current standings Keeney has unofficially qualified for XGAMES, while Burke just needs to secure a few points in round three to clinch the remaining spot for AWD limited drivers. In 2WD it’s neck and neck between Matthew Johnson and Dillon Van Way, Johnson holds a mere four point advantage on DVW.
We take a break from RallyCross for a few months, and turn our focus back to stage rally. Round #3 of the Rally America Championship, Olympus Rally gets underway on April 29th in Ocean Shores Washington. Flying Finn Marcus Gronholm Dominates at Global RallyCross #1, While Jimmy Keeney Walks Away From the Big One.

By Neil McDaid
Irwindale CA, March 26, 2011. As round number one of the Global RallyCross Championship got underway on Friday morning, it quickly became apparent that we were going to witness a master class in driving from WRC Champion and Flying Finn Marcus Gronholm. Marcus, who teamed up with Best Buy and Ford Racing for the inaugural round of the Championship would dominate on both days of competition, taking his 2011 Ford Fiesta to the top spot on the podium in both Super Rally and RallyCross.
Considering the short amount of time from when we had confirmation that Global RallyCross was a go, the organizers did a bang up job in pulling it all together for the first round. With a mountain of dirt trucked into the infield of Irivindale’s Toyota Speedway earlier in the week, it was all hands on deck to get the course set in time for competition. Adding to the already tight schedule, wet weather in the area in the days just prior to the event hampered in the construction of the Gap Jump bringing things right down to the wire as the teams arrived.
The 70 foot Gap Jump was to be the main feature of the course layout, with a smaller second jump thrown in for entertainment value. Several hundred concrete and plastic jersey barriers would form a maze in the infield, which drivers would navigate to complete their laps.
With a limited entry for the first round we basically ended up with two classed, AWD and 2WD. To the disappointment of many, myself included Mikael Eriksson’s  mighty 2WD Porsche  911/966 got delayed in U.S. customs and did not make the event, which left the remaining  2WD  entries evenly matched for the most part.,
Not so much in the AWD class, for Art Gruszka, Jimmy Keeney and Joseph Burke who showed up in their regular stage rally cars, it was kind of like bringing a knife to a gunfight. They were down by as much as 200 HP to the RallyCross specific cars, nonetheless undeterred they fought well with what they brung.
Leading the charge for the Americans was Tanner Foust in his RockStar Energy / Ford Racing backed AWD Ford Fiesta. Foust volunteered to take the first pass over the jump to determine the optimal speed to clear the gap. The approach speed to the jump is critical, too slow spells disaster as we have seen in the past at XGAMES, and would unfortunately witness again at this event.
Day one would get underway with Super Rally, a racing format developed for XGAMES competition. Despite the best efforts of the announcers, the fans in the stands struggled to grasp the concept of the super rally. I have to say that it can get a bit confusing at times to understand where things are at.  Down time between runs was extremely tedious, granted this should improve as more cars enter at future events.

A moment of high flying drama during the AWD eliminations had the fans on their feet in awe. While chasing Marcus Dodd in the Hyundai Veloster, Jimmy Keeney from Colorado would disintegrate his pristine Subaru STI over the jump.
Jimmy made a late gear change as he approached the gap jump ramp, which dropped his approach slightly below the required speed. He just about cleared the gap but his rear tires would clip the edge launching the car back into the air followed by several end over end flips before the mangled Subaru came to rest at the bottom of the ramp.
There were a few tense moments before Jimmy emerged from the side window of the car. The Irwindale track rescue teams sprang into action and were with Jimmy within seconds of the car coming to a rest.
Although the car was a total loss, Jimmy’s safety equipment performed as planned and thankfully despite been a little sore from the belts Jimmy walked away from this massive wreck to race another day.
Onto the quarter finals, America’s rising rally star Joseph Burke would throw down a massive drive against Sweden’s Mikael Jernberg.  Jernberg who is one of Europe’s top professional RallyCross drivers has decided to forego racing in Europe for a year and contest the new Global RallyCross Championship and XGAMES. Burke’s Mitsubishi Evo was clearly drastically down in power to Jernberg’s angry little Skoda, but it did not deter young Burke from hounding the old hand around the course.
Jernberg would eventfully take the win over Burke and go on to edge out Tanner Foust in the semi finals.
Jernberg would now meet WRC legend Marcus Gronholm in the final who despite having a slight mechanical glitch on the start line of one of the heats breezed his way through to the finals.
Apart from Jimmy’s big moment, the SuperRally final was the highlight of day one, Gronholm and Jernberg would go at it hell for leather. Jernberg getting a nose ahead on Gronholm on the opening lap but it was only a nose, Marcus was on the attack. The pair gets into each other at the bottom of the jump ramp, Marcus would power his way through and edge out Jernberg for the lead. Despite continued intense pressure from the Jernberg, Marcus would take the overall victory in Super Rally. Tanner Foust would claim third from his placing in the semifinals.

The course layout for the 2WD cars excluded the large gap jump, but the small jump on the second dirt section inflicted some front end damage on the 2WD cars as the battled the clock in qualifying, before it was flatten out some by the track crew.
Dillon Van Way and Tyler TurnBull both in Ford Focus’s along with Randy Zimmer and Matthew Johnson who were both in the Mazda camp all advanced from qualifying to the 2WD Final.
In the final, Van Way got the edge and ran with it to the finish line, Matthew Johnson steered the Mazda RX8 to second, and while a very elated Randy "Zoomer” Zimmer brought his very unique Miata home in third.
Despite the lack of HP, traction and any sign of sponsors, the 8 drivers entered in 2WD gave it their all on every lap.
Day two would see a much better crowd in attendance over day one, drivers took a time out from the action to sign posters and just about anything else for the fans. Photo Neil McDaid www.rallyworldnews.com
Day two, we move from Super Rally to the RallyCross format, the track layout out gets a slight tweak by the organizers to reduce the risk of impact after the jump. We also are delighted to see the arrival of Dave Mirra and Team Subaru for day two. For some unknown reason beyond our information level, Subaru decided to sit out day one.
After a few practice laps, we would jump right into the 2WD heats. Dillion Van Way would set the early pace, with Andrew Sutherland in the Honda Civic in second and Matthew Johnson in third.
Sliding over from Formal D, drifter Chris Kregorian showed up Saturday in his twin turbo spinning Nissan 350Z to get in on some of the RallyCross action. Andrew would grab forth in the first heat.
Dillion Van Way would also take heat #2, with the Kregorian moving up to second and Randy Zimmer moved to third.
Matthew Johnson, tried his best to grind the passenger’s side door handle off his Nitro Circus sponsored Mazda as he clipped a tire in the heat of battle and slide over the finish line on his side. Somehow the car managed to drop back on all fours; Johnson fired it up and returned to the pits.
Whether it was from the bump landing or some other little gremlin working its way into the RX8, Johnson’s car decided it would stay in second gear. Despite all kinds of tugging and pulling it was locked in. Not wanting to give in just yet Johnson would complete the last heat in 2ND gear, while others had issues Matthew somehow managed to make to the finish line to qualify for the 2WD A-Main.
In the words of Matthew Johnson, “Rally needs more characters” well, you will be hard pressed to find a more interesting character in rally than the man himself [pictured on the right] and no less of a character is his fellow 2WD competitor Randy “Zoomer” Zimmer. Photo Neil McDaid www.rallyworldnews.com
There was no want of drama when the AWD cars started the heat races, five of the ten starters DNF’ed in the first heat.
Dave Mirra misunderstood the starting system and failed to launch in his heat, Art Gruszka tagged a barrier which stopped his run.
But it was Joseph Burke who brought the fans to their feet in the early going. Burke while running second to Hyundai team driver Rhys Millen come into the gap just a little too hot, he clipped the bank performed a perfect mid air flip and landed his Evo on the guard rail. “it’s hard to back off when you’re so close to a victory even it’s only a heat race, I was right there with Rhys coming into the gap, the rear end just stepped out, I thought I had it recovered enough to make the turn, but over she went, I fired it up right before it landed but it was caught up on the rail-bummer” it would take some creative work by the tracks recovery crew to get Burke stricken Evo off the guard rail.   Marcus Gronholm took the heat #1 victory, trailed by team mates Tanner Foust and Pontus in third.
The Ford’s of Marcus Gronholm and Pontus Tidemand would falter in heat #2, and DNF.  Because of damage sustained in his earlier roll, Burke would have to sit out heat 2 while his crew rushed to repair the car.  Tanner Foust took the victory in heat #2 with Hyundai Team mates Rhys Millen and Marcus Dodds finally getting a good showing in thier beautiful new Velostar’s.
Heat # 3 seen a return of the Ford men to the top of the sheet, Marcus, Tanner and Pontus made it 1,2,3,. Stephan Verdier in his Crawford powered Subaru was pushing hard to took forth.
With the heats and the b-mains behind us it was onto the finals.
For some strange reason the crew can always seem to eke out just a few more horsepower from the cars for the A-Finals.
As the 10 minute warning was giving to the 2WD drivers to report the start line, all kinds of drama was going on under Johnson’s Mazda, I think I counted 5 pair of feet sticking out from under the RX8 at one point.
The car was still stuck in gear; Matthew was keeping us posted via twitter, “Bummed, car stuck in 2nd gear....running out of time. Might have to try to compete in 2nd and givr” but @mjrally quickly follow up with “Holy cow, just got ma' gears back! Thanks Odi at FEAL suspension! Ready to rock I think” yes indeed MJ was back and ready to rock.
And rock it he did, Matthew got off to an early lead, Dillon Van Way and Andrew Sutherland would start to close the gap on Matthew in the closing lap, but their tight racing would get the better of them. As the charged along the front straight, Andrew would clip one of the barriers which pitched his Honda in front of Dillon taking both of them out of the race. Randy Zimmer who had been in forth now moved to second and Laughlin O Sullivan grabbed the final podium spot in third. It was back to back podium finishes for Johnson and Zimmer in the Mazda’s a great result for two men that drove cross country to get to L.A...

On to the climax of two long days of racing, the AWD, A-Main, I have to say there are few things in motorsports that can compare to the standing start of the AWD cars in RallyCross. Not to make lite of the situation in Japan, but I swear I felt the earth shutter as the cars launched.
It was Marcus Gronholm with the edge as they rounded turn one at Irwindale speedway, closely flanked by team mate Tanner Foust and privateer Stephen Verdier. With Pontus Tidemand leading the second pack of Dave Mirra and Rhys Millen, all three headed towards the jump.Marcus would maintain his lead over Foust as the laps counted down, Pontus Tidemand who was rubbing bumpers with Stephen Verdier for third pulled off to the side on the front straight in the closing laps with mechanical issues. .
Stephen Verdier would find an opening and passed Foust for second, which he held for a half of a lap, before Foust grabbed it back. In the end it was all Marcus, he just seemed to be able to turn it up a notch when needed taking the overall victory on both days of the event.  Tanner Foust would keep Verdier at bay and held second. By taking third, Stephen Verdier proved there is a place on the podium in this sport for the privateer, as he beat the factory supported teams from Subaru and Hyundai.

Crews will head north to Seattle for round #2. It’s doubtful that we will see Marcus Gronholm in attendance, but it’s not out of the question. Most of the competitors that ran at Irwindale seem set to compete in Washington. Hopefully we will see a few more drivers jumping into the 2WD battle. Stay tuned for more info as it becomes available; also check in with http://www.global-rallycross.com/ for the most up to date info and tickets.

NASCAR Meets Global RallyCross at Irwindale

Olsbergs OSE Team Crew Chief, Andreas Eriksson gingerly hands over the key of the 2011 BestBuy Ford Fiesta to Nascar driver AJ Allmendinger for a few hot laps around  Irwindale Speedway. Although Almendinger was not allow to take the jump in the car, he very quickly adapted to the angry little Fiesta and put in a few very respectable laps. Photo Neil McDaid /RallyWorldNews.com .
March 25, 2011, Irwindale, CA. Drivers and their crews  started to arrive Thursday for round one of the 2011 Global RallyCross  Championship. NASCAR’s  AJ Allmendinger from the Best Buy /Ford racing team also stopped by to check out and drive one of Ford’s 2011 RallyCross Fiesta’s.

Nascar driver, AJ Allmendinger [left] gets a few pointers from World Rally legend Marcus Gronholm, “you must also turn right a lot, and be happy with the handbrake” great advice indeed for rallycross. Competition will get underway today Friday, with some rain forecasted in the area, we expect it will make for some very interesting action. The rain over this past week has also made things very challenging for the course construction, the build team worked late into the night Thursday adding the final touches to the course layout.
The course itself is rather tight in places, comprised of 60% Tar and 40%dirt the layout should keep cars fairly tight together and maybe to close in places.

Joseph Burke adds some final decals to his Mitsubishi Evo 8; this will be Burke’s first time to tackle to XGAMES style gap jump which is part of the course layout at Irwindale. “Hopefully we get it right first time and have no drama” said Burke. Photo Neil McDaid /RallyWorldNews.com

Michael Jernberg brings the Wicked Skoda Fabia to USA for the 2011 Global RallyCross Championship

Irwindale CA, Top Swedish RallyCross driver Michael Jernberg has just been added to the entry list for the opening round of the 2011 Global RallyCross Championship. Michael will drive his 2000 cc Trollspeed design, four cylinder, 16 valves, 550 bhp, Skoda Fabia in U.S. Competition.
Michael will not compete in Europe in 2011 and will only focus on the GRC rounds and ultimately compete at XGAMES 17. Michael looks forward to “Fun with a new country, new drivers and it is also a fun challenge for me”.

“Mind the Gap” Global RallyCross, the New Path to XGAMES 17 + World Rally Champion Marcus Gronholm Confirmed for Round 1

Irwindale CA. European style RallyCross is back in the United States and organizers are already promising to bring us to new heights in this highly charged form of Motorsport in 2011. After a very successful series of RallyCross events run by RallyCar in the fall of 2010, at New Jersey Motorsports Park [NJMP] we are now only weeks away from the opening event of the 2011 U.S. RallyCross season.
The new season also brings a new championship series to the mix. The first three RallyCross events this year will be run under the Global RallyCross Championship [GRC] banner. Under this new organization, drivers will now be competing door to door for their place at the XGAMES 17 in Los Angeles whereas in prior years, drivers would qualify for the XGAMES through the Rally America stage rally championship. Three additional rounds will be run by RallyCar for the U.S. RallyCross Championship after the XGAMES.  These rounds will be run in conjunction the Torc Off Road Racing Series where the organizers have already disclosed a very attractive cash purse.
It’s important to note that drivers who compete in the GRC events will also be eligible to score points towards the 2011 U.S. RallyCross Championship.

Round number one of the GRC, “The Revolution,” will be held at Irwindale Speedway in California in less than two weeks time. Because of the late confirmation of the series, many teams are left scrambling to get ready. We may not see a full field in Irwindale, but it may be a case of quality over quantity.
The course layout at Irwindale will feature 60 percent tarmac and 40 percent dirt.  All GRC events will feature an XGAMES style 70-foot gap jump.
Round two, “Twin Peaks,” heads northwest to Seattle, Washington. The location has all the components for a Ken Block Gymkhana video, set in a rural industrial complex with a course layout of 50 percent dirt and 50 percent tarmac. Drivers will drive through structures and various tarmac sections before taking on the 70-foot gap jump.
Round 3, “Last Chance,” is just that, a last chance to get into the XGames.  Teams will head to Pike’s Peak International Raceway in Colorado. The course layout is expected to be similar to Irwindale. This GRC RallyCross event will also serve as an opening event in a week of speed leading up to the famed Pikes Peak Hill Climb.
While the AWD cars will be racing for a place at the XGAMES, GRC organizers will offer cash prizes for drivers competing in the 2WD Class. The top scoring 2WD driver after the first three rounds will also get an invite to compete at XGAMES 17, but they will have to do so in an AWD if they chose to attend.
There is no question that the USA is primed and ready to embrace RallyCross.  2011 will be a building year for the series and hopefully we will see more drivers jumping in as the rounds progress.  The sport really needs to build on its grassroots drivers and not solely depend on star drivers to make this work. The confirmation that all rounds of the GRC will be televised by ESPN is a great boost to the growth of the sport and will aid drivers in their search for sponsors.

Round 1
Entries are slowly trickling in for round one of the GRC.  After an impressive showing at NJMP in 2010 Tanner Foust will be back in his RockStar Energy backed Ford Fiesta. Tanner is definitely a hot favorite for the overall victory.
Also for round one, it looks like we will see WRC Champion Marcus Gronholm make an appearance.  Marcus will pilot one of the OlsbergsMSE 2011 Fiestas. It will be interesting to see if the fans in the stands at Irwindale appreciate the greatness of Gronholm.  He seemed to wonder among the crowd at Pikes Peak Hill Climb sometimes unnoticed when he competed there two years ago.
Rhys Millen, an experienced rally driver who has been successfully competing in the Formula Drift series in recent years, is now making his transition over to RallyCross. Millen jumped in for the final two rounds at NJMP in 2010 to get a feel for the discipline.  He arrived in style in a WRC Hyundai Accent. Over the winter the team at Rhys Millen Racing [RCR] has been hard at work developing two all new 2012 Hyundai Veloster for RallyCross.  The car was recently unveiled to the public at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show.
Rhys will be joined in Irwindale by his new teammate Macus Dodd in the second Veloster.  Dodd, who is a five-time British National Rally Champion, brings a wealth of knowledge to the RCR/Hyundai team.
We also expect to see Subaru Rally Team driver Dave Mirra in the lineup.  At this time we have no indication of a second car from Subaru, but it is early yet.  Another Pro-drifter in transition to RallyCross, Stephan Verdier who got an invitation drive at XGAMES 16, will take to line at round one in his Subaru.
2010 Rally America Rookie of the Year Joseph Burke will be looking to jump his way into the XGAMES 17. Burke will most likely compete in a Mitsubishi Evo 8. Burke did compete in RallyCross in 2010, and was an instant fan favorite.  Other drivers who we fully expect to see at round one are Andrew Comrie-Picard, Pat Morro and Arkadiusz Gruszka.
Due to schedule conflicts for round number one it’s highly unlikely that we will see any of the European RallyCross drivers that we had at NJMP in the fall of 2010, but we expect to see some trickle in for rounds 2 and 3. Organizers have also made mention of several new manufactures showing more than a passing interest in the Global RallyCross Championship.

With the exception of the XGAMES we have yet to see Ken Block get into the RallyCross mix.  With his 2011 WRC schedule it’s going to be difficult for him to make any of the opening rounds. Ken has expressed interest in RallyCross but still has a strong desire to compete in at least one round of the Rally America Championship in 2011. As a past medal winner Ken is already confirmed to compete at XGAMES 17.
It’s no secret that many European RallyCross and rally drivers harbor a great desire to compete at the XGAMES, so we fully expect some world class drivers to enter a round or two of the 2011 GRC.
